Build a Drone Synth Workshop

Exploring Regional Creativity: UniSC Maker Space Workshop

19 November 2024, Sippy Downs, QLD, Australia

Our first research action took place at the UniSC Maker Space on the Sunshine Coast, where we hosted a hands-on workshop focused on building a drone synthesiser designed by Dr Andrew Brown. Led by Dr Andrew Brown and John Ferguson, with Dr Andy Bennett also in attendance, the workshop attracted strong interest from local musicians and makers, highlighting the growing enthusiasm for DIY instrument building in regional communities.

Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of the drone synthesiser, learning essential skills such as soldering, circuit assembly, and instrument customisation. The workshop provided an opportunity for regional artists to engage with creative technology, share knowledge, and explore new approaches to sound-making.

Beyond skill development, this workshop aimed to build connections between participants, fostering new networks that will continue to grow beyond this event. We hope it will serve as a catalyst for future workshops, collaborations, and events initiated by the participants themselves, strengthening the regional music and maker community.
