Our next research action will take place in Denmark, Western Australia, a coastal town 423 kilometres south-southeast of Perth. As part of our ongoing investigation into regional creative ecosystems, we are collaborating with local artists and musicians to present Found Sound, an interactive project exploring the intersection of audio, electronics, and place-based sound practices.
Found Sound has been accepted as part of the Brave New Works festival, taking place this April in Denmark. The project is designed to equip participants with practical skills in sound creation, electronic instrument building, and sound manipulation, laying the groundwork for future creative exploration in these areas.
Running throughout the festival, Found Sound consists of two hands-on workshops:
- DIY Making Workshop – Participants will build a lo-fi sampler, gaining foundational skills in electronic instrument construction and sound-making.
- Field Recording and Sound Manipulation Workshop – Exploring both built and natural environments, participants will collect and creatively transform sounds for performance.
Both workshops will culminate in an improvised performance led by local artists, where participants will experiment with their newly created instruments and collected sounds. This performance will draw inspiration from the festival’s theme, which reflects on the Sun’s energy—from its expulsion to its evanescent display in our atmosphere.
Through Found Sound, we aim to foster new creative networks, enhance regional artistic exchange, and investigate how practical skill-sharing contributes to sustainable creative communities. This project is a key step in our broader research on supporting and connecting digital music creators in regional Australia.
